At the first COST 237 International Workshop in Vienna, Professor Augusto de Albuquerque launched the idea of the organisation of a European Conference on Multimedia supported by COST 237 on one side and the Image Communication Project Line of RACE on the other side. The first European Conference on Multimedia Applications, Services and Techniques, ECMAST'96 took place in Louvain-la-Neuve in May 1996, and was very successful as more than 150 people attended this first event. Out of the 92 papers that were submitted, 52 were selected to be presented and included in the participant proceedings. The Steering Committee finally decided to make of ECMAST an annual event and to maintain the co-operation between our COST Action and now the ACTS programme. Updated versions of nine papers of ECMAST'96 have been selected for a special Issue of ETT (European Transactions on Telecommunications, Vol. 4, 1997. ECMAST'97 was organised by COST 237 and the ACTS domain on Image Communication. This conference was hosted by Italtel, in Milan, in May 1997 and the active participation of COST 237 in the Steering Committee and in the Programme Committee has been confirmed. More than 180 people attended the event wich saw 48 papers, including several from organisations outsie Europe, presented in parallel sessions over two and half days. ECMAST appears now as a well established annual event. Proceedings of the conference has been published by Springer Verlag, in Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 1242 (ISBN 3-540-63078-3). ECMAST'98 will be held in Berlin, from May 26 to 28 1998.
