Aims and Scope:

The work of the original COST237 WG1, "New Transport Service Specification", was based on a recognition of the key role played by the transport service in matching the new requirements of cooperative multimedia applications to the increasingly sophisticated support offered by emerging network technologies. After two years of activity, WG1 has been highly successful in its aims having defined a multimedia transport service incorporating both quality of service (QoS) specification and multipeer connectivity, and having made substantial contributions to the ISO SC6 Multipeer Taxonomy.

This new "Communications Support for Multimedia Applications" WG will build on the work of WG1 by considering the protocols and mechanisms necessary to underpin the enhanced transport service. Its concern will thus be the detailed mapping of the transport service onto network technologies (primarily ATM based and Internets) and end-systems. The WG will focus on developing an understanding of the protocols required for multicasting, resource and QoS management, media-scaling, and distributed control (signalling) in a heterogeneous network and end-system environment. Another important area of study will be the influence of application characteristics such as media encoding on protocol design, as well as application-oriented design.

Protocols and mechanisms for cooperative multimedia applications are currently a prime focus for many standardization and institutional bodies. Among these are the ATM Forum, the IETF, DAVIC, TINA, ITU, and ISO. This working group will monitor developments in these various bodies and will make direct contributions where appropriate.

The working group will identify the many different challenges for enabling distributed multimedia applications over heterogeneous networks, monitor the work carried out in this area and derive a joint contribution on the framework to address this hotly debated topic.

Finally, it is expected that having contributed to the design of protocols and mechanisms for the support of cooperative multimedia applications in the network and end-system, a new activity will be required to integrate these developments into a global architecture in conjunction with the other COST237 Working Groups, with a special interest with the ongoing work of WG4 (Security and Applications).
