Rationale: The success of distributed multimedia systems in the market will depend on the development and demonstration of successful applications. In WG 1 we try to "practice what we preach": we use TeleTeaching and EuroSeminars as an application for networked multimedia systems. The participants are members of COST237 all over Europe; other institutions are invited as guests. In the context of COST237, teleteaching and distance learning have a good chance to be a successful example application for multimedia over high-speed networks. Many universities in Europe already run experiments with teleteaching, but there is very little contact and exchange of ideas between the projects. Industry is very interested in reducing cost for employee travel and trainers using the technology. Interactive distance learning, right from the workplace, would be a major advantage for many employees in high-tech companies where short innovation cycles are of critical importance for a survival in international markets. And life-long learning is a key factor here. Objectives: Demonstrate the feasibility of online seminars over the Internet. Share technical expertise and new ideas and views on telecommunications and multimedia all over Europe. Identify problems and bottlenecks in today's networking and application software and work jointly on improved versions. Technical Approach: Set up an MBone network between participating locations: arrange for links with sufficient bandwidth for audio and video, install the MBone tools and configure the routers and tunnels. Find good speakers who are willing to share their technical expertise and views with colleagues all over Europe. Set up a mailing list and announcement procedures for the EuroSeminars. During the seminars, monitor network performance, identify bottlenecks and technical problems. Collect reports from participating sites. Work on improved versions of TeleTeaching tools, possibly in joint projects. Write reports on the experience for the benefit of all.
