The changing networking environment and the need of new standards A. Danthine1 1 Research unit in Networking, EECS department, University of Liège, Belgium (1993) Abstract The last ten years have seen a tremendous change in the communication environment. The changes in network performances have been at the origin of new protocols and of more efficient method of implementation. The changes in network service capability have raised the issue of offering, at the transport level, services available at the subnetwork or at he network level such as multicast service, synchronous service and broadband service. The changes in application requirements have introduced new requirements for ommunication. The Client/Server paradigm is looking for low latency, multimedia for low jitter and many applications are requesting bandwidth. This paper assesses the new networking environment of the nineties and introduces the need of new OSI standards for the transport service and for the transport protocol, standards to be designed with a methodology based on FDT. The OSI 95 project (ESPRIT II) is an example of such an approach.
